Venetia Hawkes // Author, Script Editor & Executive Producer

With over twenty years’ experience supporting creatives to craft engaging screen stories, at the NFTS she is responsible for arranging and hosting filmmaker Q&As, and for providing script editing and development support on projects with Industry partners, such as the BAFTA nominated short, Stomach Bug, made with BBC Film.

She was formerly a member of Right Angle, the script and series editing company behind animated adaptations of classic stories for BBC, Channel 4 and HBO, which won BAFTAs, Emmys and an Academy Award nomination. She has been part of the BAFTA jury for short animation and a member of the British Independent Film Awards sub-committee for screenwriting and directing.

She provides independent script and story development advice for a small number of writers and directors, across a range of genres. She has also written articles, specialising in filmmaking, heritage, and the countryside, which have featured in publications including Screen International.

Her first book, ‘We Have Some Notes… The Insider’s Guide to Notes, Script Editing and Development’, was published by Bloomsbury/The British Film Institute in 2024. In it she interviews leading writers and directors, including Russell T Davies, Sally Wainwright, Lynne Ramsay and Edgar Wright, to explore the art of giving and receiving ‘notes’ and how to make it a constructive part of the creative process.
